DAY 1 Fly to Adelaide

Adelaide, sitting on the Torrens River, with the Southern Ocean at its heel, and wide elegant, tree lined avenues; the friendly city of parks, and spires and oh! Sooo much more! Discover elegant colonial architecture, boutique shopping, great sandy swimming beaches, vibrant arts and festivals, cultural and sporting events, happening nightlife, fine dining, great cafe strips. A pleasant drive away from the city, see friendly country towns and fertile farmlands welcome visitors to wineries and orchards with farm gates and cellar doors of world famous wineries as Adelaide comes of age as a world class tourism destination.

Fly to Adelaide, pick up your car from the airport and make your way to your Adelaide hotel. Spend the rest of the day at your own leisure.

DAY 2 Explore Adelaide

Spend the day taking in the sights and surrounds of Adelaide. Maybe visit the many churches, renowned museums and galleries of Adelaide that make the city one of the most cultural yet cosmopolitan cities in Australia.

Alternatively, you can visit the seaside town of Glenelg, famous for its beaches and many tourist attractions.

The choice is yours.

DAY 3 Adelaide to the Barossa Valley

Enjoy an hour long drive to the famous Barossa Valley via the Adelaide Hills and Williamstown. Take in the rugged landscape and cool climate of the Hills on your way to Williamstown on the southern fringe of the Barossa Valley. The town is most beautiful during spring with a rolling carpet of lush green grass and wildflowers along the multitude of creeks and woodlands covering the ills around the town along with many dairy pastures.

Continue to the Barossa Valley where you will spend the next two nights.

The Barossa Valley is one of Australia’s best and most famous wine-producing regions, now regarded as one of finest in the world, and is home to Australia's most expensive wine, Penfolds Grange as well as a variety of other local produce. Direct driving 76km (1 hour) .

DAY 4 Explore the Barossa Valley

Spend the day visiting some of the best cellar doors in Australia or alternatively visit Maggie Beer’s Farm shop, the Whispering Wall or even take a hot air balloon over the verdant and pristine rolling landscape of the region.

The Whispering Wall in Williamstown in the Barossa Valley is a unique phenomenon allowing you to “throw” your voice over 100 metres. The unintentional phenomena is created due to the wall’s curved shape which leads to voices being carried from one side of its arch to the other, even when whispered, hence its name.

For visitors looking to take in the gourmet side of South Australia, a visit to Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop is a must. Maggie Beer is a renowned figure on the Australian food scene and the Farm Shop has been enthralling visitors since the 1970’s. The shop is a celebration of the diversity of produce of the region and visitors can try an array of jams, oils, pates and ice creams or even enjoy a meal at the restaurant on the lovely lakeside property. Guests can even enjoy cooking demonstrations or a walk around the farm itself and take in the birdlife of the area such as peacocks, quails and pheasants.

There is truly something for everyone in the Barossa Valley!

DAY 5 Barossa Valley to the Clare Valley

Today, continue through the wine making region of South Australia to your home for the next two nights, the beautiful Clare Valley.

The region is most famous for its Riesling wines, with the Clare Valley considered the Australian home of Riesling, but also produces a number of other varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The continental climate of the region with its cool to cold nights even, during summer, and warm to hot summer days is due to its elevation in comparison to other wine regions in South Australia. This allows the fruit to ripen more evenly and slowly even during the heat of summer when temperatures can reach 40 degrees during the day. Direct driving 97km (1.25 hours) .

DAY 6 Explore the Clare Valley

The Clare Valley has over 48 wineries and 200 growers. No trip to the Clare Valley would be complete without a visit to Sevenhill Cellars, the first winery established in the Clare Valley, and settled in 1851. More than just a winery, this magnificent property was first established by Jesuit priests to provide sacramental wine in catholic parishes around Australia. It features an underground cellar excavated by hand, a winery building constructed from stone quarried on the property, a beautiful church that was completed in 1875 and also, the only crypt below a parish church in Australia! The College building was built in 1854 and served as South Australia’s first Catholic Secondary School between 1856 and 1886. To this day it remains the only Jesuit-owned winery in Australia.

You may also wish to visit the historic Bungaree Station, a South Australian Heritage site and still an active sheep station. The station was founded in 1841 by the Hawker family and evolved into a large settlement which included the main homestead as well as a number of outbuildings including a station store, District Council Chambers and a church.

You may take a self-guided walk through the station complex, complete with audio-posts, signs and displays, and learn about the people who lived and worked on the station as well as about South Australia’s pioneering past.

The station is still run by the 4th and 5th generations of the Hawker family and offers a unique venue for weddings and conferences as well as providing heritage accommodation and day tours.

DAY 7 Clare Valley to Port Lincoln

Leave the gorgeous Clare Valley this morning and travel up and around the Spencer Gulf and into the Eyre Peninsula. Travel through Port Pirie, Port Augusta and south along the coast to Port Lincoln.

Stop at the picturesque seaside towns of Port Neill and Tumby Bay on your journey to the “Seafood Capital of Australia”, Port Lincoln. Direct driving 533km (5.5 hours) .

DAY 8 Explore Port Lincoln

The Eyre Peninsula is gifted with something unique, powerful and highly sought after: a coastal region that is isolated, rugged, raw; and with seafood to die for. Port Lincoln, situated on the shore of Boston Bay is the largest city in the West Coast region and is famous for its seafood industry, especially for its Southern Bluefin Tuna fishing industry.

The city is home to Australia’s largest commercial fishing fleet and produces a cornucopia of seafood including Southern Rock Lobster, abalone, clams, Southern Bluefin Tuna, mussels, yabbies, marron, oysters, Kingfish, crabs and prawns as well as a variety of other deep sea marine life.

Port Lincoln is truly a seafood lovers’ dream destination!

DAY 9 Explore Port Lincoln

Spend the day exploring the surrounds of Port Lincoln and Coffin Bay. Take in some of the best coastal scenery in South Australia at Whalers Way or enjoy a tour of an oyster farm in Coffin Bay including sitting at a table in the middle of the Bay eating some of the freshest seafood on the planet!

You can also swim seal lions or tuna and for the more adventurous, even Great White Sharks! There are also multiple wineries in the area that you can visit as well as guided tours and tastings of the Peninsula’s seafood.

DAY 10 Port Lincoln to Whyalla

Depart Port Lincoln today for Adelaide and drive back along the coast to Whyalla, the third most populous town in South Australia. Famous for its annual migration of Giant Australian Cuttlefish, the town has become a hotspot for snorkelers and divers and between the months of May and August the animals can be seen in water and shallow as 1 metre!

There are also several museums and public tours that showcase the history of Whyalla. You can also view the HMAS Whyalla, a retired World War II era corvette that was the first ship built in Whyalla during the war. Direct driving 268km (2.75 hours) .

DAY 11 Whyalla to Adelaide

Continue your journey back to Adelaide via Port Augusta and Port Pirie. Port Augusta is a seaport and railway junction located immediately South of the Spencer Gulf’s head. It is also home to the iconic Pichi Richi Heritage Railway, a narrow gauge line that connects Port Augusta to Quorn.

Port Pirie is a predominantly industrial town on the east coast of Spencer Gulf and is home to the world’s largest lead smelter, operated by Nyrstar.

Continue your journey through the rolling landscapes of South Australia before arriving in Adelaide for the night. Direct driving 382km (4 hours) .

DAY 12 Fly Home

Today marks the end of your gourmet seafood and wine self-drive. Make your way to the airport for your flight home, or alternatively, you can spend more time in beautiful South Australia.
