DAY 1 Fly to Hobart

Take a deep breath of fresh Tasmanian air and sense the southern island's rich history as you arrive into beautiful Hobart. You will be personally met at the airport by a DISCOVER AUSTRALIA representative and transferred from the airport to your hotel. You can relax and use the rest of the day to explore your hotel and its facilities, perhaps take a stroll around the neighbourhood and central Hobart.

DAY 2 Hobart & Coast Small-Group Cruise

Enjoy a relaxing slow-paced start at your hotel with plenty of time to explore Hobart this morning, before your action-packed fast-boat cruise this afternoon.

With an unsurpassed natural setting, a strong sense of history, daring art, a dynamic food scene and a wealth of natural attractions there is plenty to explore. Perhaps wander through Hobart's historic waterfront featuring the magnificent old sandstone warehouses of Salamanca Place. Stroll along the working docks past the floating Brooke Street Pier and Douglas Mawson's Antarctica Hut Replica Museum. Maybe try some fish and chips from a floating fish punt or dine in the finest and freshest of restaurants. Browse the quirky and artisan shops, or simply marvel at the incredible architecture and wander through magnificent gardens.

This afternoon we venture down the Derwent River to explore the spectacular ocean coastline on a luxury small-group cruise (with a maximum of 12 people). Discover the renowned waterways that influence Hobart's lifestyle. Visit Australia's oldest lighthouse, circumnavigate Betsey Island and uncover the city's rich maritime past.

Cruising down the Derwent River we'll pass historic Battery Point, one of Tasmania's premium residential addresses. We’ll see well-known landmarks like the iconic Wrest Point Casino and the Shot Tower. Further south, we'll truly appreciate the scale of Mount Wellington as it towers over the city. Arrive at the famous Iron Pot lighthouse and be immersed in the fascinating history as our guide shares stories of Hobart's early settlement. Explore caves & see hundreds of seabirds. Cruising into Storm Bay, we reach Betsey Island. This uninhabited island is home to little penguins and seabirds like the majestic white bellied sea eagle, cormorants and gulls. As we circumnavigate Betsey Island, Hope Beach comes into view. This isolated beach is known for its large breaks and offshore winds. We cruise close into the shore and feel the swell surging straight from the Southern Ocean; these conditions make this a favourite spot with local surfers. As we return to Hobart you’ll feel thoroughly refreshed, with a newfound appreciation for this beautiful harbour city.

Travel aboard a brand-new fast vessel. The spacious enclosed cabin contains comfortable leather seats. Large awning windows and open decks provide a great view and allow you to immerse yourself in the surroundings.

DAY 3 Hobart City Tour

Enjoy a relaxing start to your day, before being treated to a guided tour of beautiful Hobart in the afternoon. You’ll see historic Battery Point, Salamanca Place, the Botanic Gardens, Constitution Dock, the destination of yachts participating in the Sydney to Hobart race each year and from the summit of Mt. Nelson, breathtaking panoramic views over Australia’s southernmost city.

In the evening, meet with your Travel Director and get to know your fellow travellers at a Welcome Dinner.

DAY 4 Tour from Hobart to Strahan

Head west this morning to Mt Field National Park, Tasmania’s oldest National Park. Mt Field National Park is home to Russell Falls, a spectacular three tiered waterfall surrounded by towering swamp gums. Enjoy a leisurely walk through towering tree ferns and giant eucalypts on the short walk to these breath-taking falls.

Then, behold the beauty and intrigue of Lake St. Clair, the deepest freshwater lake in Australia. The atmosphere at Lake St. Clair is both mysterious and otherworldly, there’s an almost enchanted presence at this tranquil place. The Aboriginal name for Lake St. Clair is leeawuleena, meaning ‘sleeping water’, and on calm days, you can see why this name perfectly captures its essence.

We then journey through Queenstown along the rainforest bordered road, Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, a World Heritage listed National Park, and then on to Strahan, your home for the night.

DAY 5 Gordon River Cruise with Special Lunch, Sarah Island & Heritage Landing

Enjoy a spectacular lunch cruise along Gordon River today. Cruise through Hell’s Gates, the exhilarating entrance to the harbour and take in the beauty of the dark waters that are stained amber by button grass tannins. Stop at Sarah Island for an insight into the lesser known convict history of Macquarie Harbour Penal Settlement (a place where convicts would fell Huon pines for boat building) and then disembark at Heritage Landing to view one of these magnificent trees.

We return to Strahan where we are entertained by a live performance of ‘The Ship that Never Was” – a dramatic and hilarious true story of the great escape from Sarah Island.

DAY 6 Explore Cradle Mountain, Dove Lake and Tour to Burnie

Enjoy exploring enchanting Cradle Mountain National Park this morning and visit the spectacular Dove Lake, surrounded by vast Tasmanian wilderness. Spot native wildlife like Bennetts wallabies, echidnas and pademelons grazing in the alpine heathlands with the towering Cradle Mountain as your breathtaking backdrop.

Then it is onwards to meet the smallest and feistiest member of this island’s wildlife – the Tasmanian Devil. A Day Keeper tour at the local sanctuary offers an unforgettable experience – the rare chance to witness these extraordinary animals up close, whilst a dedicated Keeper shares fascinating insights into the species and the vital programs working to save them.

DAY 7 Tour from Burnie to Launceston

This morning we visit spectacular Table Cape which rewards us with stunning panoramic views of the spectacular coastline, vibrant tulip fields in spring, and on a clear day, the distant mountains 175 kilometres away. The iconic lighthouse adds a historic touch, while the vast scenery offers a truly unforgettable experience of Tasmania's natural beauty.

Later travel through Penguin, delighting in the penguin sculptures standing at every turn, then Ulverstone and on to Sheffield, the town of murals, for a wander through this historic town. Sheffield is famous for having murals depicting the regions rich history and local characters on almost every blank wall in the town!

Ashgrove Cheese is our final stop on our way to Launceston, and an absolute favourite. Here, happy cows contribute to award-winning cheese – and for the sweet-tooth there is the divinely creamy and delicious locally made ice-cream.

DAY 8 Cataract Gorge & Fly home

This morning, we visit the unique natural formation of the Cataract Gorge, home to the longest single-span chairlift in the world. Experience the awe-inspiring beauty of Cataract Gorge where towering cliffs, lush forests and the thunderous sound of the river create a dramatic landscape that will leave you captivated. Perhaps join an optional experience on a Cataract Gorge River Cruise or the scenic chairlift. The choice is yours.
