DAY 1 Fly to Hobart

Take a deep breath of fresh Tasmanian air and sense the southern island's rich history as you arrive into beautiful Hobart. You will be personally met at the airport by a DISCOVER AUSTRALIA representative and transferred from the airport to your hotel. You can relax and use the rest of the day to explore your hotel and its facilities, perhaps take a stroll around the neighbourhood and central Hobart.

DAY 2 Hobart City Tour

Enjoy a relaxing start to the day, before being treated to a guided tour of beautiful Hobart in the afternoon. We will see historic Battery Point, Salamanca Place, the Botanic Gardens, Constitution Dock, the destination of yachts participating in the Sydney to Hobart race each year, and Mt. Nelson, for breathtaking panoramic views over Australia’s southernmost city.

In the evening, meet with the Travel Director and get to know your fellow travellers at a Welcome Reception and dinner.

DAY 3 Explore Salamanca Market

Enjoy a free day to take in the sights, sounds and colours of Salamanca Market. Explore the various stalls, wander through the historic sandstone warehouses, and delight in the local produce and freshly baked delicacies.

Later, choose from a selection of included sightseeing experiences. You may join a walking tour with an expert local guide to learn about Hobart’s history, a guided walk of the alcohol history of the city or you may visit the Mawson’s Hut Replica Museum where you can learn about the hut Douglas Mawson built on his expedition to Antarctica between 1911 and 1914.

DAY 4 Tour from Hobart to Strahan

Depart Hobart and tour west to Mt Field National Park, home of the three tiered Russell Falls and Tasmania’s oldest National Park. Join your guide for a walk through the luscious green rainforest. Later, continue to Lake St. Clair and the Wall in the Wilderness, a hand carved sculpture depicting scenes commemorating the people who have shaped the region’s past and present.

Continue through Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park and through Queenstown to the coastal town of Strahan, our home for the night.

DAY 5 Strahan to Cradle Mountain

Enjoy a spectacular cruise along Gordon River today. Take in the beauty of the dark waters that are stained amber by buttongrass tannins. Stop at Sarah Island for an insight into the lesser known convict history of Macquarie Harbour Penal Settlement.

See Hell’s Gate and Heritage Landing before passing through the towns of Roseberry and Tullah on our way to Cradle Mountain National Park, our home for the next two nights.

DAY 6 Explore Cradle Mountain

Enjoy exploring beautiful Cradle Mountain National Park this morning and take a guided walk around the spectacular Dove Lake. Spot native wildlife like Bennetts wallabies, echidnas and pademelons grazing in the alpine heathlands.

Later, you may choose to make your own way back to your hotel through the meandering forests and heathlands on the purpose-built boardwalk.

DAY 7 Cradle Mountain to Launceston

This morning visit Hellyer’s Road Distillery for guided walk through the working distillery to learn about the ingredients and processes that create one of the world best single malt whiskeys. Visit Sheffield, the town famous for its murals depicting the history of the area before arriving at the award-winning Ashgrove Tasmanian Farm to try a selection of local cheeses.

Continuing on to Launceston, travel through the Meander Valley to arrive at Tassie's northern capital.

DAY 8 Cataract Gorge & Special Winery Lunch

Visit Cataract Gorge this morning before taking a scenic drive through the Tamar Valley. Visit Josef Chromy wines for a special winery lunch of local Tasmanian produce and cool climate wines. Take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards and lakes.

This afternoon is yours to spend at your leisure.

You may take an optional cruise on the Tamar River or a tour of the James Boags Brewery. The choice is yours.

DAY 9 Launceston to Freycinet National Park

Depart Launceston today and tour north east towards Bridestowe Lavender Estate, an estate that has been growing lavender since 1922. Try some of the lavender products at the estate and even lavender ice-cream!

Continue to Legerwood Carved Memorial trees, which were planted in honour of fallen World War I soldiers. Stop at St Helens after lunch before following the East Coast to Freycinet National Park, our home for the next two nights.

DAY 10 Freycinet National Park

Spend the day exploring beautiful Wineglass Bay today on a four hour lunch cruise of the Freycinet Peninsula. Cruise from Coles Bay under towering Pink Granite cliffs to one of the world’s beast beaches where we will enjoy a gourmet Ploughman’s lunch. Later, drive through dry eucalypt forests to Cape Tourville Lookout for a walk that will reward us with brilliant views of the stunning blue water, forest and golden beaches.

DAY 11 Tour from Freycinet to Hobart via Ross & MONA

Tour to historic Ross enroute to Hobart, considered the finest 19th century village in Australia. Treat yourself to the self proclaimed “Best Scallop Pie in Tasmania” from one of the two local bakeries before visiting the Shene Estate for a special experience.

Enjoy a walking tour with the custodian of the estate, Anne Kernke, and take in the properties stunning original buildings including the barn and stables which are a true reflection of early Australian architecture. We will also be invited into Anne’s private home where we will find a great collection of fine wares and can admire the original décor.

Later, enjoy a morning tea of home baked goodies before continuing our journey to Hobart.

Enroute to Hobart, visit the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), Australia’s largest privately funded museum which houses an eclectic mix of ancient, modern and contemporary art. You may choose to cruise back to Hobart on the MONA ferry or visit Mawson’s Hut Replica Museum.

DAY 12 Port Arthur

Immerse yourself in colonial history, exploring the World Heritage Listed Port Arthur, considered one of the world's most significant convict era sites. Cross Eaglehawk neck onto the Tasman Peninsula and enjoy a cruise around the Isle of the Dead and a guided walking tour Port Arthur Prison. You will also have time to explore the area on your own before you leave. Visit Pirate’s Bay lookout to take in views of the rugged sea cliffs and see the spectacular vistas of Tasman’s Arch, Devil’s Kitchen and the Blowhole as we tour back to Hobart. This evening, a final get together with our travelling companions over a special dinner.

DAY 13 Hobart & Coast Small-Group Cruise

Enjoy a relaxing slow-paced start at your hotel with plenty of time to explore Hobart this morning, before your action-packed fast-boat cruise this afternoon.

With an unsurpassed natural setting, a strong sense of history, daring art, a dynamic food scene and a wealth of natural attractions there is plenty to explore. Perhaps wander through Hobart's historic waterfront featuring the magnificent old sandstone warehouses of Salamanca Place. Stroll along the working docks past the floating Brooke Street Pier and Douglas Mawson's Antarctica Hut Museum. Maybe try some fish and chips from a floating fish punt or dine in the finest and freshest of restaurants. Browse the quirky and artisan shops, or simply marvel at the incredible architecture and wander through magnificent gardens.

This afternoon we venture down the Derwent River to explore the spectacular ocean coastline on a luxury small-group cruise (with a maximum of 12 people). Discover the renowned waterways that influence Hobart's lifestyle. Visit Australia's oldest lighthouse, circumnavigate Betsey Island and uncover the city's rich maritime past.

Cruising down the Derwent River we'll pass historic Battery Point, one of Tasmania's premium residential addresses. We’ll see well-known landmarks like the iconic Wrest Point Casino and the Shot Tower. Further south, we'll truly appreciate the scale of Mount Wellington as it towers over the city. Arrive at the famous Iron Pot lighthouse, and be immersed in the fascinating history as our guide shares stories of Hobart's early settlement. Explore caves & see hundreds of seabirds. Cruising into Storm Bay, we reach Betsey Island. This uninhabited island is home to little penguins and seabirds like the majestic white bellied sea eagle, cormorants and gulls. As we circumnavigate Betsey Island, Hope Beach comes into view. This isolated beach is known for its large breaks and offshore winds. We cruise close in to the shore and feel the swell surging straight from the Southern Ocean; these conditions make this a favourite spot with local surfers. As we return to Hobart you’ll feel thoroughly refreshed, with a newfound appreciation for this beautiful harbour city.
