DAY 1 Fly to Hobart

Take a deep breath of fresh Tasmanian air and sense the southern island's rich history as you arrive into beautiful Hobart. You will be personally met at the airport by a DISCOVER AUSTRALIA representative and transferred from the airport to your hotel. You can relax and use the rest of the day to explore your hotel and its facilities, perhaps take a stroll around the neighbourhood and central Hobart.

DAY 2 Hobart City Tour & MONA

Blessed with an abundance of natural beauty, this charming city is situated on the beautiful Derwent River and has a well-earned reputation as a world-class destination for food and wine lovers. The historic and scenic capital of Tasmania is Australia's second-oldest city. Marvel at Hobart's rich colonial heritage which is evident in its beautifully preserved Georgian and Victorian era buildings. You'll be beguiled by the renowned Salamanca Place, the vibrant, waterfront heart of Hobart with its bars, restaurants and exciting shopping opportunities. The city's breathtaking backdrop is the rugged Mount Wellington contrasting with the cobalt waters of the city's waterfront right out to the exquisite Peppermint Bay.

Enjoy a comprehensive three hour tour of Hobart and surrounds, including 5 stops and plenty of amazing photo opportunities. DAY 3 Explore Hobart

Spend the day exploring the sights and surrounds of Hobart at your own pace. You may choose to visit MONA, the famous museum set in a winery on the Berriedale Peninsula and is the largest privately funded museum in Australia. Alternatively, you can spend some time strolling through Salamanca Place, visit Mt Wellington or the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.

DAYS 4 – 10 Board the Coral Discoverer & Explore Southern Tasmania

Today begin your 7 night expedition cruise of Southern Tasmania aboard the Coral Discoverer. Your itinerary is flexible allowing the Captain and Expedition Team to respond quickly to favourable weather conditions and immerse you in the best of this pristine regions flora, fauna and coastline.

Your expedition cruise includes the following highlights:

Cruise 60km down the River Derwent and under mighty Tasman Bridge, Captain’s Welcome Drinks at sunset onboard, Taste Tasmanian cheeses and fresh, sweet, plump Bruny Island (Pacific) oysters. Learn about the Angasi Tasmania Oysters, Sail the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, the mouth for the estuaries of the Derwent and the Huon Rivers. Enjoy dinner at our overnight anchorage near Bruny Island.

Enjoy a tour and tasting at Grandvewe Cheeses, the only organic sheep cheesery in Australia. Meet the sheep known as “The Girls”. Taste up to 8 different products and view the process of cheese making from paddock to palate, Explore the Woodbridge Marine Discovery Centre and learn about and meet species including lobsters, urchins and octopuses, Huon Cruise and quaint Franklin Township, the oldest town in the region, with many antique wares, visit the Wooden Boat School and meet the makers who hand-make each vessel as you tour the centre, cruise South East Cape, the southernmost point of Tasmania, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Wilderness Area .

Enjoy an Xplorer cruise of beautiful Recherche Bay, part of the National Heritage Register and only accessible by water, cruise Cockle Creek, the very edge of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, see the famed bronze young southern right whale statue and enjoy an optional scenic hike at the start of the famed South Coast Track led by our Expedition Leader and Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Ranger.

A marine reserve and part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, Port Davey is Tasmania untouched. If conditions allow, guests will spend two full days exploring this pristine wilderness. Otherwise accessible only via a 7 day hike or charter flight, Port Davey feels like an endless unchartered wilderness, full of endless sheltered bays filled with endemic marine life to explore. Participate in the unforgettable optional experience of kayaking in Bathurst Harbour, disembark to explore the ‘Narrows’ aboard our tender, an obviously narrow stretch of water that very few vessels can navigate through. Take a guided hike of Balmoral Hill Track, amble remote Melaleuca village, and meet the locals who live in a town accessible only by sea, air or foot. You may even have the chance for potential sightings of the endangered Orange-bellied parrot.

Enjoy a scenic cruise along the southern coast of Bruny Island, site of the South Bruny National Park and walk to historic Cape Bruny Lighthouse, first lit in 1838. It is now the country’s second oldest and longest continually staffed extant lighthouse. Visit The Friars, a collection of steep dolerite rocks, covering an area of approximately 42 acres that are home to a large population of Australian Fur Seals. See these magnificent beasts haul up on the rock or feast on seafood. Aboard our tender, drift past nesting seabirds. Visit Adventure Bay where you can swim, kayak or relax on the sheltered beach and be immersed in history at the Bligh Museum of Pacific Exploration. Built from thousands of convict made bricks, the Museum contains a myriad of documents, maps and artefacts from explorers including James Cook, Matthew Flinders and William Bligh. With your expedition leader, participate in an optional guided Fluted Cape Walk, starting from the eastern end of Adventure Bay (approximate walking time 3 hours), explore the historic 19th century whaling station ruins and sample Tasmanian wine at a tasting session.

The spectacular peninsula of Freycinet is crafted from pink granite peaks – the Hazard Mountains – surrounded by azure bays, and backed by dry eucalypt forest. Awake to dawn at Freycinet National Park and take in the majestic surroundings. With your expedition leader, join an optional guided hike (approximately 1.5 hours return) to the Wineglass Bay Lookout and later, join a beachcomber’s walk (approximately 30 mins) along Wineglass Bay, consistently voted one of the most breathtaking beaches in the world.

Walk amongst the historic ruins, secluded bays and rugged cliffs of Maria Island National Park and you can expect to meet more than a few incredible creatures. Since the 1960s a number of threatened species have been introduced here, in a bid to protect their kind. Expeditioners can expect sightings of native pademelons, Forester kangaroos, Bennetts wallabies and Tasmanian Devils. Visit World Heritage-listed Darlington, part of the “Convict trail of Australia” and gain an understanding of the life of the early settlers in a restored 17th century convict penitentiary. A walk from Darlington (approximately 2 hours return) takes in the dramatic Painted and Fossil Cliffs, created by the movement of mineral-rich water though the rock, and by the later eroding action of winds and waves. Later, from Encampment Cove walk to the ruins of Maria Island’s second convict station at Point Lesueur at Long Point on the island’s west coast.

Feel small again as you stand beside the 300 metre sea cliffs and monumental rock formations of Tasman National Park. Be awed at the sights of sea stacks – tall dolerite formations – that stand tall out of the ocean. View Tasman Arch, The Candlestick and Cathedral from perfect positions at sea. In this area of huge natural diversity, guests can expect to meet Australian and New Zealand Fur Seals “hauling out” on the rocky shore at Tasman Island, as well as dolphins and albatross.

Be sent back in time, and gain an understanding of the life of convicts that built Tasmania at Port Arthur Historic Site. This is Australia’s most evocative convict site housing Britain and Australia’s ‘worst’ criminals. Participate in an exclusive ‘behind the scenes’ tour guided by a resident archaeologist. The tour features private collections and historical buildings not accessible to public.

This evening, enjoy Captain’s farewell reception at Port Arthur’s Asylum building, with memories of the voyage warming the chilly history of the room.
