Great Southern Train – Summer Each Year

The new Great Southern train has become as iconic as its sister train journeys The Ghan and Indian Pacific, but only operates during summer each year. Enjoy the same private cabins, dining experiences and friendly crew aboard this completely new railway journey, that uses the same rollingstock as the long-established and popular Ghan and Indian Pacific. Experience the same hallmark quality of off-train activities and escorted touring across these new spectacular locations. The Great Southern is different in each direction.

You have the option to take the Great Southern in either direction:

Adelaide to Brisbane (2 nights, 3 days) - Thursday departures

The Adelaide-Brisbane journey includes touring in The Grampians, Canberra and a special beachside dining experience on the Northern NSW Coast.

Explore one of Australia’s most stunning wilderness regions, boasting sandstone mountains, wildflowers, waterfalls and native fauna such as echidnas and wallabies.

There’s more than just politics in our nation’s capital. As you arrive into Adelaide you can feel the history and culture of 'The City of Churches'. Australia's third-largest city is well known for its green leafy parks, urban inner-city villages, bustling streets, interesting laneways, art galleries, museums and South Bank with its lush riverside gardens, markets, and massive lagoon.

Today we tour this energetic city, experience the iconic view from Kangaroo Point, cruise the Brisbane River and travel on the massive Wheel of Brisbane. As we tour through the main attractions, you will get a deep appreciation of Brisbane's rich history and see the spectacular architecture that characterises Queensland's capital city.

Onboard the Brisbane River Cruise you will travel through the scenic heart of the city, see the spectacular views of waterfront homes, the Brisbane skyline, South Bank parklands, cruise under Story Bridge and enjoy a delicious morning tea. Known for its crystal clear waters, white sand and untouched national parks, this winning combination is sure to please everyone. The Island is also home to amazing natural flora and fauna - spend the day at leisure at Tangalooma Island Resort and enjoy some of the many activities on offer.

The Resort has plenty of free activities on offer. For nature lovers, see the Pelican Feeding & Sea Bird Talk or learn about the iconic Australian bird, the Kookaburra, at the Kookaburra Feeding. The Tangalooma Island Resort also offers a selection of casual sporting areas, perfect for a relaxing afternoon game - enjoy tennis, squash, boule, basketball, badminton and croquet are just to name a few. Swim in the resort pools or crystal clear unspoilt beaches. Tangalooma Water Sports offer a variety of interesting demonstrations great for the whole family - learn how to work a motor boat or sail a catamaran. If you don't like sand in your shoes, instead you can journey along the coastline in search of dolphins, dugongs, green sea turtles, sea cucumbers, rays and more! Hop on board the purpose built catamaran which provides unobstructed views of Moreton Bay’s intriguing marine life. DAY 7 Australian Zoo & Sunshine Coast

CRIKEY! Australia Zoo is home to The ‘Crocodile Hunter’ and is one of the best wildlife conservation facilities in the world. Made famous by Steve, Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin in their global documentaries, the sheer amount and variety of mammals, reptiles, birds and attractions here is mind-blowing. Throw out your old ideas about the ultimate zoo experience, here you will be invited to get up close and personal, hand-feed and maybe cuddle the wildlife. The five-thousand capacity Animal Planet Crocoseum hosts various crocodile, snake and bird shows, whilst the African Safari exhibit replicates the Serengeti complete with zebras, rhinos and giraffes.

Today you will experience the thrilling and action packed wildlife shows and meet many of the 1200 animals across the 100 acres of the world famous Australia Zoo. You'll experience wildlife like nowhere else. Roving animal teams walk around the grounds throughout the day with various animals such as alligators, birds, snakes, and lizards so you can meet them and have your photo taken with them. There are 4 walk-through enclosures where you can enter and hand feed the animals. View crocodile feedings and participate in elephant feedings. Jump on Steve's Safari Shuttle hosted by friendly and knowledgeable guides.

We tour north from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast, past the magnificent Glasshouse Mountains and onto Australia Zoo. Steve and Terri Irwin's vision has always been to make Australia Zoo the biggest and best wildlife conservation facility in the entire world, and indeed there is no other zoo like Australia Zoo. Today explore Brisbane at your own pace. There is so much to choose from in this major city. The many major attractions include Queen Street Mall, various markets, The Gabba, ANZAC Square War Memorial, City Botanic Gardens, Roma Street Parkland, Queensland Museum and Sciencentre, Queensland Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, The Courier-Mail Piazza, Maritime Museum, Performing Arts Centre, Conservatorium and of course South Bank. Admire the remarkable colonial and modern architecture, including The Ship Inn (built in 1864), The Plough Inn (1885, part of World Expo 88 festivities), South Brisbane Railway Station, The Arbour, The Goodwill Bridge, Performing Arts Centre, State Library, Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC) and River Quay.
