An 80km-long section of the Murchison River that winds through the coastal plain and Kalbarri National Park into the sea near the town of Kalbarri. Kalbarri National Park contains some of the most impressive red-and-white-banded gorges and rugged coastal scenery anywhere in Australia.

Kalbarri Hawks Head

A visit to Hawks Head Lookout, affords great views of the eastern sections of the Murchison River. Oxbow River bend The Loop, is beautifully visible through the amazing Natures Window. Over time, erosion has caused a large hole to appear in the sandstone, leaving a window-like frame of the meandering bend of the Murchison River. A one-in-a-million photo opportunity!

Kalbarri Z Bend

The Z-Bend is where the Murchison flows through a winding ravine with daunting 150m-tall cliffs on either side. Red Bluff has extensive views south overlooking the colorful red and white layers that comprise the Tumblagooda sandstone.

More picturesque sites can be found at Mushroom Rock, Pot Alley and Rainbow Valley. In addition to these ocean gorges, there are numerous paths off the main coastal roads that allow you to explore the sea cliffs and white beaches on foot and some by 4WD. Kalbarri is well worth adding an extra day or so to any itinerary to visit the special places along the coast north and south of Kalbarri.
