Broome To Darwin Kimberley Discovery Itinerary


Day 1 Broome to Windjana Gorge

Depart Broome early and head to the Derby Prison for a short visit. Discover the restored Old Derby Gaol, the oldest building in town built in 1906. Learn of the Gaols significance to the Derby community at the site.

Feel the instant remoteness as you leave the bitumen behind you and begin a journey along Gibb River Road. The 4WD road between Derby and Wyndam traverses some of the most spectacular gorge country of the Kimberley.

Be amazed by the enormity of the walls at Windjana Gorge as you visit it in the afternoon. Travel along the 3.5km path that winds its way through the gorge along permanent pools of water.

Camp overnight at Windjana National Park and see the Napier Range glowing in the evening sun.

Day 2 Windjana Gorge to Bells Gorge

Head off to Western Australias oldest cave system, Tunnel Creek, in the morning. Have your bathers and torches ready as the creek flows through a water worn tunnel beneath the limestone of the Napier Range.

Wade through several permanent pools and watch for bats and stalactites that descend from the roof in many places. Learn about the history of Tunnel Creek and the Napier Range from your guide.

Experience Bells Gorge in the afternoon. Marvel at the waterfall at the gorge that is the beginning of a series of waterfalls that descend through the Isdell Range to Walcott Inlet.

Enjoy the big open area of Silent Grove near Bells Gorge as you camp there overnight.

Day 3 Bells Gorge to Manning Gorge

Leave Bell Gorge in the morning and travel through the beautiful scenery of the Kimberley's highest mountain range, King Leopold Ranges, on your way to Galvans Gorge.

Swing on the tree rope at Galvans Gorge before jumping into the water below. Alternatively, you can sit on the rocks underneath the falls and have your back massaged by the water. Experience a bush walk to Manning Gorge in the afternoon. Take the time to explore the tranquil pools and view the Aboriginal artwork of the area.

Set up camp for the night at the nearby Mt Barnett Station.

Day 4 Manning Gorge to King Edward River

Depart the Gibb River Road and travel along the Kalumburu Road towards Mitchell Plateau, visiting Drysdale River Station on the way. Encounter life on the working cattle station.

Take an afternoon swim along the banks of the King Edward River where you will be camping overnight.

Day 5 Mitchell Plateau and Falls

Experience some awesome driving conditions as you make your way by 4WD to the Mitchell Plateau.

Watch as the open scrubland of the trail gives way to a Livistonia palm forest.

Discover the Mitchell Falls from above with an optional helicopter flight from where you can see some of the most remote country in the world. Alternatively, you can spend the time swimming and looking out over the cascading falls.

Return to king Edward River to camp overnight.

Day 6 King Edward River to Home Valley Station

Visit the Aboriginal paintings of the area in the morning.

Depart the river camp and Mitchell Plateau and travel back down Kalumburu Road to rejoin Gibb River Road.

Journey through the majestic Cockburn Range and have your camera ready as we wind our way towards Home Valley Station at the base of the Cockburn Range.

Stay overnight at Home Valley Station.

Day 7 Home Valley Station to Kununurra

Journey along the Cockburn Ranges in the morning as you make your way to El Questro Station. El Questro contains magnificent mountain ranges, rambling rivers, countless gorges and thermal springs for you to encounter.

Enjoy a walk to the stunning Emma Gorge and reward yourself with a swim in the crystal clear waters.

Day 8 Kununurra

Experience many attractions of Kununurra as you enjoy the day free to explore the town.

Perhaps visit the Historical Society Museum that contains artifacts and photos of the development of Kununurra.

Alternatively, visit Celebrity Tree Park, a collection of trees on the shore of Lake Kununurra where celebrities including John Farnham and Princess Anne have planted trees. Lily Creek Lagoon at the edge of the park is a good spot for bird watching.

Spend the night at Kimberleyland Caravan Park in Kununurra.

Day 9 Kununurra to Bungle Bungles

Rise early in the morning and travel to the unbelievable beehive dome formations and plunging gorges of the Bungle Bungles.

Immerse yourself in the 150-meter sheer rock face of Echidna Chasm before walking to Mini Palms Gorge. Marvel at the tall orange cliffs and lush rainforest vegetation that surrounds you after walking through the harsh rocky landscape.

Camp overnight in Purnululu National Park and sleep at one of the most amazing geological landmarks in Western Australia.

Day 10 Bungle Bungles to Kununurra

Take an optional helicopter over Purnululu National Park and wonder at the amazing sights of the Bungle Bungles from above.

Walk to Cathedral Gorge and witness the spacious cavern that rises high into the sky, making you feel insignificant.

Enjoy lunch in the beehive dome region of the park and view the tiger-stripped rock formations.

Undergo the winding journey back to the town of Kununurra where you will stay overnight.

Day 11 Kununurra to Katherine Gorge

Enjoy a relaxing morning with a visit to Lake Argyle, the biggest man made lake in Australia. Have the opportunity to observe the variety of reptiles and marsupials that can be seen along the 900 kilometers of Lake Argyles shoreline.

Cross the Northern Territory Border and head towards the town of Katherine.

Day 12 Katherine Gorge to Darwin

Discover Nitmiluk Gorge by taking up an optional river cruise. View the Aboriginal paintings that are thousands of years old, which overhang the ancient rock walls, high above the flood line.

Enjoy lunch at Edith Falls and relax around the paperbark and pandanus fringed natural pools at the base of the falls.

Travel along the Stuart Highway to Darwin and immerse yourself in the freedom of the vast open spaces. Farewell your tour buddies when you arrive in Darwin where your tour concludes.
