Sandy Bay History
Sandy Bays most intriguing history is based around its iconic casino. Originally a hotel called the Wrest Point Riviera, the site was sold to Federal Hotels who had plans to secure Australias first casino license during the 1960s. In hope that a casino would boost Tasmanias tourism industry, a state referendum for the casino license was held and luckily passed. In 1973, the casino opened, prompting the growth of the Australia-wide casino industry.
Sandy Bay Today
Today, the Wrest Point Hotel Casino is an iconic landmark nationally identified with the capital city of Hobart. Interestingly, the 64-metre tower is still Hobarts tallest building.
