Watarrka National Park Kings Canyon Northern Territory Australia
Watarrka National Park is 330km southwest of Alice Springs and best known for Kings Canyon, a mighty chasm that cleaves the earth to a depth of 270 metres. The sheer red rock face of the canyon soars over 100 metres above lush palm forests, sheltering them from the surrounding desert conditions.
Watarrka National Park Flora and Fauna
The park is an important conservation area, whose rock holes and gorges provide refuge for over 600 species of plants and many native animals.
This abundance of fauna is due largely to the location of Kings Canyon, which combines areas of the western desert with the more varied flora of the MacDonnell Ranges and the harsh vegetation of the Simpson Desert.
Watarrka National Park Attractions
A 6km walk up to and around the rim of the canyon takes you past the strange rock formations known as the 'Lost City'. Then swim in the oasis-like palm-fringed pool called the 'Garden of Eden'.
