Jabiru, population 1696, is the main centre of Kakadu found between the East Alligator and Nourlangie regions. Jabiru, officially a mining town, offers services designed to limit the effect of the town on the surrounding delicate ecosystems.
The site of the uranium mine near Jabiru was historically known to Aborigines as sickness country due to the high natural radioactivity levels.
