Miranda - History
Romantic James Murphy the manager of Holt Sutherland Company named the township after the character 'Miranda' in Will Shakespeare's work 'The Tempest' in 1881. Murphy wrote in October 1921, that he found Miranda to be a soft euphonious, musical name that suited the beautiful place. In March 1964 the massive Miranda Fair shopping centre was opened and the Premier cited it as 'a wonderful example of the area's rapid change' and declared that in his overseas trip the previous year he had not seen such an impressive shopping centre. Situated only 30 minutes from Sydney CBD, Miranda has good access to the attractions of Sydney with the casino, riverside Kings Wharf and Darling Harbour; and the Sydney Convention Centre, China town and excellent markets with an array of fresh fruits and unique crafts, theatres and shows and shops.
