Leura Blue Mountains New South Wales Australia
Tree-lined Leura with its chic Mall full of boutique coffee houses, giftshops and eateries is concidered the Blue Mountains most elegant town. Located 105 km west of Sydney, Leura is full of attractive houses with European and English style gardens.
The first Europeans in the area were Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson in 1813 who probably spent a night camped near where the Leura Railway Station now stands, which was built in 1891.
After the construction of roads crossing the Blue Mountains the town experienced some development but settlement was slow.
Between 1885 and 1887 there was some coal mining at the Gladstone colliery, which was located near the present site of the Leura golf course. The coal was sent to Sydney by railway, which was located near the mine.
Since the 1920s the area was a popular holiday destination for Sydneysiders eager to escape the heat and humidity of the city.
