Bathurst Australia

On the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range, in Wiradjuri country, 209 kilometres west of Sydney is the elegant city of Bathurst, population 26 050. Bathurst is the oldest inland settlement in Australia, well known for its gold discoveries.

Bathurst Climate

The towns location creates a cool climate, sometimes it snows in winter, so Bathurst has an atmosphere that is different to any of the coastal towns or the other inland centres.

Bathurst History

Proclaimed as a city in 1815, Bathurst developed slowly as a main supply centre for the surrounding agricultural region but flourished in the 1850s and 1860s after gold was discovered at Ophir and the Turon River.

Bathurst Today

Nineteenth century architecture is beautifully preserved so it is a delight to wander the streets, explore the antique shops and relax at a cafe.

The most well-known feature of Bathurst is the race it hosts every October, the Bathurst 1000, an endurance race and motor-racing meeting at the Mount Panorama Racing Circuit.

Bathurst acts as centre for the surrounding fruit and grain growers and also has a university campus.
