Descriptions
DAY 1 Perth - Geraldton
Travel north from Perth, experiencing the changing vistas of the coastal plain.
Experience the Pinnacles Desert in the Nambung National Park; perhaps allowing time to wander in the shifting sands, mid these mystical towers.
See world-renowned wildflowers in season; everlastings, spider orchids, leschenaultia, fringe lilies, kangaroo paws and banksias. On route to the Greenough Flats, see river gums, Geraldton wax, smoke bushes and avenues of banksias line the roadside; see the awesome leaning trees of Greenough - Eucalyptus camaldulensis. Visit the Central Greenough Historical Settlement, complete with church, shops, school and the haunting gaol, where prisoners were held in dire conditions. One of the earliest settlements in the State, the village is authentic to the last detail to show how our fore fathers lived. Take time to enjoy the fabulous sunset over the Indian Ocean and the great beaches of Geraldton, where the year-round sunshine and temperate conditions has gained the town the name of "Sun City". Direct driving 432 km (4.30 hours)
Overnight Geraldton Accommodation.
DAY 2 Geraldton - Kalbarri
Before leaving Geraldton, pay homage at the cliff top site of the splendid memorial to the 645 crew of HMAS Sydney, who lost their lives in the mysterious and unrecorded wartime battle with the HSK Kormoran in 1941.
See the evocative statue of the "Watching Lady" - the mother who looks out to sea, searching for her lost sons. The wreckages of both vessels lay undiscovered on the bed of the Indian Ocean for some 67 years. Perhaps see the splendid Art Deco Geraldton Cathedral, with its elegantly sophisticated and unusual interior.
Continue northbound passing historic Northampton Township then on to dramatic scenery. Look out for the legendary Thorny Devil and other unique native wildlife as you traverse the Kalbarri National Park en route to Kalbarri. Perhaps see the Ross Graham Lookout and the magnificent gorges created by the mighty Murchison River. See where the mighty Murchison flows into the Indian Ocean; or visit the Kalbarri Wildflower Centre to see over 140 species of native plants and flowers set in 16 hectares of bushland. Dinner at Finlay's Fish BBQ is a unique Aussie delight and the exotic free flying birdlife of the Rainbow Jungle are good enough reasons to visit Kalbarri. Direct driving 158 km (1.50 hours)
Overnight Kalbarri Accommodation.
DAY 3 Kalbarri - Perth
Depart Kalbarri early, heading south via the coast road and cliff tops, see the exotic coastal gorges created by the Indian Ocean.
En route to Geraldton, see many unique wildflowers in season. The Geraldton Wax flower (Chamelaucium Uncinatum) so favoured by florists worldwide, is native to this region. Check out the hedgerows for the amazing fragile sacs of web, some as big as a football and all full of leaf debris and tiny spiderlings. See avenues of fabulous banksias.
Continue southbound to the historic twin towns of Dongara - Port Denison, a picturesque crayfishing village. See the historic old mill, a remnant of the times when farming was the reason for early settlement. Perhaps enjoy a local crayfish lunch and see the 'Big Lobster' before continuing along the coastal scarp to Perth. Direct driving 587 km (6.10 hours)
With so much to see and do in this exciting region, why not consider adding extra days? Getting off the black top in a 4WD to explore will bring an extra dimension to this great experience.
