DAY 1 Cairns - Port Douglas
Drive along the famous Captain Cook Highway Drive with amazing views across the spectacular turquoise Coral Sea, especially at world famous Rex Lookout, one of the most photographed parts of Australia.
Today you could experience Smithfield Heights, Clifton Beach, Palm Cove, Ellis Beach, Oak Beach, Craigie and Alexandra Lookout. Perhaps take a detour to see Kuranda (small village, stronghold of hippie culture in 1960s, art and craft workshops, cafes, daily market), Kuranda Markets, Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, over the tree tops and the Scenic Railway (100 years old) tunnels and bridges, with views of Barron Falls, 34km long, begins in Cairns and ends in Kuranda), Daintree National Park (rainforest, part of Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, divided into 3 sections: Mossman Gorge, Cape Tribulation and Snapper Island), Mossman Gorge (accessible introduction to rainforest by indigenous Kuku Yulanji people, more than 430 bird species) or Cape Tribulation (beaches, reef tours, horse riding on the beach). DAY 3 Port Douglas - Atherton
Drive with amazing panoramic views of rainforest and tropical Coral Sea beaches either side, see magnificent vistas from the Rex Lookout point on the Captain Cook Highway, then climb the spectacular mountain road to the Atherton Tablelands with magnificent waterfalls, volcanic crater lakes, historic townships, a tree top walk, vibrant and varied wildlife and an amazing array of tropical crops, as far as the eye can see in the fertile soils of the tablelands.
Today you could visit Julatter, Mount Moloy, Biboohra, Mareeba, Walkamin, Tolga, Tinaroo Falls, swim beneath the Millaa Millaa Falls, take a walking trail to Ellinjaa and Mungalli Falls (part of the 17km waterfall circuit), see Crater Lakes National Park (lakes formed in craters of ancient volcanos, the amazing blue Lake Barrine and Lake Eacham), see coffee plantations and seas of sugar cane as far as the eye can see. Visit the famous Curtain Fig Tree (one of the most photographed trees in the world), see amazing wildlife, swimming holes or the spectacular Queensland historical museum close to Atherton. DAY 4 Discover Atherton
Soaring a kilometre above the vast coastal plains with dramatic views to the ocean beyond en-route, the Atherton Tablelands are robed in thick, ancient growth forests with amazing flora and fauna, spectacular waterfalls cascading over towering cliff faces in the Barron Gorge National Park, waiting for you to discover nature's own precious jewels - the wondrous butterflies of the rainforests. Beyond, in the hinterland, see wall to wall vistas of sugar cane plantations, tea plantations and coffee plantations and the myriad of country townships set in fertile farmlands with good annual rainfall and rich volcanic soil, enjoying prosperity and welcoming visitors to the unique wonders of the Atherton Tablelands. Visit the laid back markets and uber chic boutiques of buzzing Kuranda or explore underground tunnels lined with fossils, minerals and crystals. Plenty of time today to enjoy some last views of the Barron Falls, or to wander beneath the high canopy of forests or perhaps get some colourful pics of the amazing Kuranda streetscape, complete with fern clad trees before taking the awesome, winding mountain road with fern trees, waterfalls and spectacular vistas across the coastal plains, and watch emerge through tall trees as you descend from the heights of the Atherton Tablelands from pretty Kuranda town then on to Cairns.
Time to venture into the Atherton Tablelands (waterfalls, volcanic crater lakes, huge vistas of cane fields and fertile farmlands, rich in birdlife and with a variety of water sports), walk the boardwalk and take some shots of the enormous Curtain Fig Tree (one of Queensland’s largest trees), take morning tea alongside Lake Barrine or follow the 17 km long Waterfalls Circuit (walking trails to Ellinjaa and Mungalli Falls, swimming spot,), Milla Milla Falls, Mainstream Falls National Park, Edmonton, Gordonvale, Tinaburra, Yungaburra, perhaps save some time to visit the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Smithfield Heights, Clifton Beach or Palm Cove and Ellis Beach.
