Portsea Travel Deals Guide

Portsea - History

After Sorrento, Portsea was one of the first settlements on the Mornington Peninsula. Early settler, James Sandle Ford 1840's named Portsea. In 1852, just beyond Portsea at Port Nepean, a quarantine station was established where migrants were kept for an isolation period to prevent the spread of the greatly feared infectious diseases; cholera, smallpox, influenza and measles. Point Nepean had a continuing history of protecting the colony as early as 1880 with the construction of Fort Nepean. The Point Nepean National Park was opened in 1988, but was later renamed as the Mornington Peninsula National Park.

Portsea - Mornington Peninsula - Attractions

Portsea is the starting point of the Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race and there are some fantastic beaches; head to Back Beach to see London Bridge, an impressive natural rock, formation and hang-gliders leaping off the cliff-face. This ocean beach has wild surf and can be dangerous for swimming: Obey the rules and stay between the flags. To the west, see Fort Nepean, once an important defence site. Portsea is often referred to as one Victoria's areas of wealth. See significant historical buildings and elegant mansions in Portsea, such as Delgany House. Many fine homes are located along the shoreline, with large landscaped gardens and weekend retreats that service the rich and the famous. Fresh local produce is exceptional and available from farm gates and roadside stalls where fertile soils ensure top quality soft fruits, apples, vegetables, cheeses, lavender, olives and other gourmet delights.

Portsea - Mornington Peninsula - Wineries

The rich hills of the Mornington Peninsula's hinterland and the fertile coastal plains produce a harvest of grapes at some 170 vineyards. Wineries abound in the areas of Red Hill, Merricks, Main Ridge, Balnarring, Moorooduc and Shoreham and about a third have Cellar Doors for wine tasting. With Pinot Noir and Chardonnay the speciality wines of the region; with sweeping bays and glorious ocean and hinterland views complementing outstanding food and wine the Mornington Peninsula is ideal for wine touring.
