To the north of Melbournes city centre is Fitzroy with its lively and artistic ambiance. Bars and restaurants occupy Johnston Street while Brunswick Street is the trendiest part of Melbourne with an 'inner city hip' characterised by cafes, bars, alternative theatre venues, record shops, funky secondhand clothes stores, and cafes filled with students, artists, writers and musicians.

The Fringe Festival, International Comedy Festival and Next Wave Festival as well as other notable arts events take place mainly in Fitzroy.
The enchanted Fitzroy Gardens host a Model Tudor Village, the Fairies Tree with its carved trunk and Captain Cooks Cottage. The cottage was Captain Cooks family home in Yorkshire and was relocated to Melbourne in 1934.
