Darebin Creek area is the traditional country of the Wurundjeri-willam people who are part of the Woiworung clan of the Kulin Nation, who are traditional owners of the country from west of Melbourne along to the Darebin Creek and to outer eastern Melbourne. The Wurundjeri-willam people were nomadic hunter gatherers and the fertile Alphington region provided fresh water from the Darebin Creek and seasonal fish, tubers and shoots from water plants; while birds and animals provided clothing and food, trees and plants provided food and tools. The original owners quarried local silcrete and basalt to produce tools; hammer stones were used to create sharp blades, axes and other stone tools.
In the mid 1800's disillusioned Chinese migrated from the goldfields and developed market gardens at Lucerne Farm, which is now the site La Trobe Golf Club in Alphington. Dairy farms operated in the area and dairy stock was commonly grazed, often roaming without restriction onto private property and down to the creek. The farmers of Alphington took their produce to the population of Melbourne at the Queen Victoria Market in central Melbourne. Towards the end of the 19 th century urbanization caused Alphington and neighbouring Ivanhoe to be developed as greenfield housing for the growing middle classes of Melbourne.
Alphington is situated for the greater part in the City of Darebin; with some 135,000 souls in an area of 53 square kilometres, Darebin is the largest and most populous municipality in Greater Melbourne. Bordered by the passive green belt flanking the Yarra on the metropolitan stretch of the river's journey from the ranges to Port Phillip Bay and large recreational areas, sheep and cattle farming on small lots is the most common form of agriculture in the rural areas of the Darebin area. Today Alphington is a multi cultural suburb, with a high percentage of professional residents and seats of higher learning with LaTrobe University, the Northern Metropolitan College of TAFE and RMIT in the greater area.
With direct rail and road links, Alphington is just 8 km from the attractions of Melbourne: the MCG, Melbourne Convention Centre, theatres and shows, Melbourne shops and markets, especially the world famous Queen Victoria Markets; a cacophony of sounds, colours and taste with wonderful fresh foods and bargains in abundance. The wineries of the Yarra Valley are on a direct route from Alphington. Bundoora Park is located over some 180ha of natural bushland; alongside Darebin Creek, Bundoora offers Heritage Village, an urban farm, and Mt Cooper, with a lookout on the highest point in Melbourne. The Fairfield and Studley Boat Houses on the Yarra are an easy drive from Alphington and the La Trobe Golf Club at Alphington is the nearest private Golf Club to the centre of the city.
