Head north along the Captain Cook Highway with spectacular views of the Coral Sea and tropical beaches as well as the sugar cane fields surrounding Mossman.
Magnificent views continue while you ascend the Rex Range to Mt Carbine, Australia's largest open-cut wolfram mine. Pass Butchers Hill and wonder about the mysterious Black Mountain before you arrive into Cooktown.
View the site where Captain James Cook beached his ship the Endeavour" after it had been holed by the reef in 1770. Visit the James Cook Museum which displays relics of Cook's landing and the town's gold-rush heyday."
Explore Cooktown at your leisure, with its many historical buildings and monuments. Return to Cairns as dusk approaches and see the bush come alive with cattle and wild kangaroos.
