Tasmanias second largest city is nestled in the Tamar River Valley where the North Esk, South Esk and Tamar Rivers meet. Launcestons ambience is provincial; old buildings, parks, gardens, riverside walks, craft galleries and hilly streets lined with weatherboard houses.

Cataract Gorge, a fifteen-minute walk from the Launceston town centre, is situated in a reserve with tree rhododendrons and peacocks, fern glades and spacious lawns.
Penny Royal World is a working replica of a 19th century gunpowder mill. Historic windmills, corn mills and gunpowder mills were moved from their original location stone by stone. Visitors can board barges that go underground to observe the production process. Each mill is linked with museums, restaurants and accommodation via a restored tram.
Ben Lomond National Park is 50 kilometres, 30 miles, southeast of Launceston. The steep rock buttresses of Ben Lomond, Tasmanias highest mountain, frown over the rich farmlands of the Fingal Valley.
