South from Port Augusta, 74 kilometres, 46.2 miles, along, Whyalla, population 23 382, is the first town located in the Eyre Peninsula. Since its beginnings in 1901 the small settlement once know as Hummock Hill has grown into the provincial city of Whyalla - South Australias second largest city, after Adelaide, the capital. It is largely an industrial city with a focus on steel, but quite modern with the facilities and recreational activities of an established city.
