Situated on the Nerang River, 72 kilometres south of Brisbane, Nerang, population 7333 is the gateway to the Gold Coast Hinterland's many farm stay resorts and the region's world heritage listed national parks and nature reserves.
The Nerang district was settled in 1863. During 1862 to 1864 cotton was grown and in 1865, the year that the town was surveyed, it was replaced by sugarcane. The first town plots were sold the following year. The 1870s saw the town grow rapidly. A hotel was built in 1872, a post office in 1874 and a school in 1876. The arrival of the railway in 1889 further cemented Nerang's existence and Nerang soon became a flourishing trading centre.
