Moreton Island, population around 270 can be accessed by ferry but exploring the island must be by four wheel drive only - tours are available if you dont want to self drive. The Moreton Island National Park, which covers virtually the whole island, is almost entirely made of sand from which grows native scrub and banksias. The numerous freshwater lakes attract over 180 species of sea, wetland and forest birds.
