Located 90 minutes drive North of Cairns, past Mossman and Port Douglas is the Daintree World Heritage Rainforest and Alexandra Bay. Alexandra Bay opens onto the Coral Sea area of the South Pacific Ocean. Situated some35 km north of the Daintree River, a large 4WD is essential to get to Cape Tribulation.

The Kuku Yalanji people lived on Cape Tribulation where the plentiful foods of their country, the rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef was able to sustain a mob of some several hundred people. Through their cultural traditions, Aboriginal people maintain their connection to their ancestral lands and waters.

Captain Cook named Cape Tribulation in 1770 when his ship the Endeavour struck a reef, some 40 km north east of Cape Tribulation when he was charting the coastline. The reef is now called Endeavour Reef; the cape was named 'Cape Tribulation because here began all our troubles.' The first white settlement began at Cape Tribulation in 1931; fruit, vegetables and timber was produced for the Cairns market, being transported by boat until 1062 when the first road was cut through to Coconut Beach.

Sitting in the shadow of 850m tall Mount Sorrow, Cape Tribulation is blessed with a tropical climate; high temperature, high humidity and high rainfall throughout the year make the area perfect for orchards of rare tropical fruits; black sapote, carambola, canistel, durian, grumichama, jaboticaba, mamey sapote, marang, abiu, breadfruit, mangosteen, pommelo, rollinia, roseapple, santol, salak, chempadek, sapodilla, rambutan, soursop, jackfruit, and sweetsop.

Hire a sea kayak from Cape Tribulation; go diving or snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef; exploring the tropical rainforest where the forest meets the reef are unique attractions. Perhaps visit the Cape Tribulation Bat House, visit the cinema or interpretive centre or simply wander on deserted tropical beaches. En route from Cairns or Port Douglas, some 9km from the ferry is the Alexandra Range Lookout, with panoramic views out over the Daintree River estuary and the Daintree National Park. The Daintree Coast is an important habitat and a 'hot spot' for the Southern Cassowary, which is classified as an endangered species of colorfully unique large native bird.
