Jabiru, population 1696, is the main centre of Kakadu found between the East Alligator and Nourlangie regions. Jabiru, officially a mining town, offers services designed to limit the effect of the town on the surrounding delicate ecosystems.

The award winning Bowali Visitors Centre near Jabiru features excellent displays describing the animals, Aboriginal culture and geology of Kakadu.
Ubirr Rock is found near the East Alligator River with many Aboriginal rock art galleries. Some of the paintings are more than 20 000 years old.
Nourlangie Rock, south of Jabiru, is another fine Aboriginal rock art site that includes paintings of Namaragan, the Lightning Man.
