Located 129 km southwest of Sydney and 5 km from Moss Vale, Sutton Forest is a tiny town that can be easily missed. Sutton Forest mainly consists of a pub, a few buildings, a couple of antique gift shops, a riding school and a church.

In 1819, Governor Macquarie decided that there should be a permanent settlement at Sutton Forest so he granted land to nine settlers besides Charles Throsby. He was impressed with the beauty of the area and the quality of the soil so he named the settlement after Charles Manners Sutton, the speaker of the British House of Commons in 1820.
The most impressive building in the village is Sutton Farm, which was originally built by convicts. The magnificent cedar staircase came from a 17th century church near Dublin. The house has been extensively modified and is now the Highlands Equestrian Centre. Situated on 50 acres they offer lessons, trail rides and holiday camps with bed and breakfast.
Just two kilometres north of Sutton Forest is Hillview, the official country residence of the governors of New South Wales from 1882 to 1958. The house is open for inspection, but only occasionally.
