| Nowra - Aboriginal History | |
In the language of local Aboriginal people, Nowra means 'camping place' or 'Black cockatoo'. Through their cultural traditions, Aboriginal people maintain their connection to their ancestral lands and waters.
In 1852, Nowra was declared a Government township and just nine years later, in 1861, Nowra began its history with the Melbourne Cup when 'Archer' won the first Melbourne Cup after walking 880km from his Terara yard to Flemington; in 1862 Archer won the second Melbourne Cup; then in 1978 when Arwon - Nowra spelled backwards - won the Melbourne Cup.
Today Nowra is the service centre for dairy farms and tourism with Shoalhaven Heads being the closest beach 17 km to the east. Surrounding Nowra, Shoalhaven is an area of fertile plains; rugged mountain escarpment; panoramic views of the coastal boundary and National Parks and State Forest with many coastal lakes, rivers and estuaries and small townships.
The Shoalwater Winery Trail begins just two hours drive from Sydney. Visit Cambewarra Estate Winery, Two Figs Winery, Seven-Mile Vineyard, Kladis Estate Wines, Roselea Vineyard or Centennial Vineyards at Bowral. Perhaps visit Diamond Creek Estate at Mittagong, or Cuttaway Hill Estate mid Mittagong and Bowral.
Australia's largest aviation museum is the Museum of Flight at Nowra with displays and planes set over 6000 sq metres.
