In John Oxleys expeditions during 1817 and 1818 he noted the rich potential of the area we now call Dubbo for grazing and agriculture. In 1828, Robert Venour Dulhunty, took up land in the area, naming his property, oDubbo, Aboriginal for red earth.
Western Plains Zoo 5 kilometres, 3.1 miles south of Dubbo is an open range zoo set in over 300 hectares of bushland and home to more than 1000 animals. Animals are kept in natural surroundings separated by moats and creeks rather than fences wherever possible. Australian animals roam in landscaped habitats and animals from five continents can meander through simulated natural environments.

This gracious two-storey sandstone building with its cedar staircase, marble fireplaces and decorative ceilings, now contains colonial farm, domestic, Aboriginal and commercial artefacts. To its rear is a collection of 19th-century buildings, which have been positioned to form a village square.

Features include a gallows pole with hangman's equipment, the condemned man's cell, solitary confinement cells, a graffiti cell, a padded cell, the watchtower, the exercise yard, a display room, the bathroom, hospital, kitchen, sanitary disposal block and wood-cutting area.
