| Coogee - Aboriginal History | |
Through their cultural traditions, Aboriginal people maintain their connection to their ancestral lands and waters. The 'ozone' from the decaying seaweed flotsam deposited on the beach at Coogee is believed to be the derivative of the name 'Coogee' in the language of the original owners of the land in the area: 'Coogee' means 'bad smell'. Coastal Aboriginal people gathered food, fished and swam along the coast for thousands of years. Middens mounds of ancient shells along the coast testify to the variety of fish and shellfish they ate. An ocean pool at Coogee Beach is believed to have been the traditional bathing pool of the local aboriginal women.
Coogee was gazetted in July 1838 and many streets names reflected sea creatures: Dolphin St., Neptune St., and Bream St., Whale St and 'Fish St'. Coogee was originally developed as an 'English style' seaside resort, complete with promenade, amusement pier and pleasure gardens. Eventually these were all demolished for safety reasons.
Now redeveloped as a holiday destination, and affectionately known as 'Sydney's seaside village', Coogee Beach is a tranquil environment of breathtaking beaches and headlands. Just a short drive from Sydney city, the casual setting of Coogee Beach draws Sydneysiders and visitors to its attractions. Coogee has excellent access to the attractions of Sydney: the casino, the riverside attractions of Darling Harbour and the Sydney Convention Centre, China town and excellent markets with an array of fresh fruits and unique clothes and crafts, theatres and shows and shops.

The world-famous Randwick racecourse, minutes away from Coogee Beach; Crescent shaped golden beach with 'women's pool' at the tip of the crescent, excellent swimming. Wylies Baths, an ocean pool with a good length for laps and a grand wooden platform is next door. The coastal walk from Coogee Beach to Bondi Beach is a clearly marked pathway, with stunning ocean views. Coogee Beach has facilities for volleyball, other ball games and kite flying.
