The towns location creates a cool climate, sometimes it snows in winter, so Bathurst has an atmosphere that is different to any of the coastal towns or the other inland centres.
Proclaimed as a city in 1815, Bathurst developed slowly as a main supply centre for the surrounding agricultural region but flourished in the 1850s and 1860s after gold was discovered at Ophir and the Turon River.
Nineteenth century architecture is beautifully preserved so it is a delight to wander the streets, explore the antique shops and relax at a cafe.
