Ballina, population 16 050, sits at the mouth of the Richmond River 753 kilometres, 470.6 miles north of Sydney, Ballina is a fishing town with golden beaches, ideal temperatures year-round and a relaxed atmosphere, offering a very laid-back holiday destination.

The aborigines that hunted in the area used the word 'Bullenah', which reputedly means 'place where oysters are plentiful' and in turn gave rise to the town name of Ballina.
It is hard not to miss the gigantic prawn sitting on top of a building paying tribute to the fishing industry of Ballina. Even from a few kilometres away the Big Prawn can be seen sitting above the surrounding sugar cane crops.
The main street of Ballina has a number of attractive buildings including the post office and the courthouse as well as a superb tourist information office, which is combined with two museums. There is also the Naval Museum and the Maritime Museum.
