Also consider that self drive holidays, rail tours, day tours or camper van or local car hire will give you the flexibility to get out of the cities where the international arrivals tend to be and into the outback or along the coast.
Though holidaying in the major cities with international airports will give you plenty to do and see and offers the biggest bang for buck with the abundance of public transport on hand.

Each state has it own unique character, Western Australia has a dry Mediterranean style climate low in humidity with endless blue sky and fantastic swimming beaches in the lower half of the state in the summer months, the far north of Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Northern Queensland are all in the sub tropics and the summer months there tend to be times of high humidity, with the summer months in the north being the wet season, the winter months in these northern regions tend to be when locals choose to holiday there as the climate is more dry and sunny with temperatures into the 30's, the winter months in the north produces more pleasant weather much like the summer months in the south.
The highest population concentrations in Australia tends to be in the coastal areas. The more north you travel the less populated.
There are vast areas of wilderness in Australia in the far north there is outback bush and tropical rain forest, central Australia is desert and in Tasmania there is rain forest, the more populated southern areas of Australia still have areas where the bush can stretch for hundreds of km's as well.
The South Eastern part of Australia has Victoria, the ACT and Southern New South Wales where Australia's cooler Mountain regions and Ski Fields are.
The Southern coastline has lots of rugged cliffs, spectacular scenery and wild life, if you are visiting the South East you may want to take a trip along the icononic tourist road trip Great Ocean Road. In the far north west there is the iconic road trip along the Gibb River Road an outback dirt track for the four wheel drive enthusiasts.
There are many spectacular beaches located through out Australia that are great and safe swimming or surfing beaches, most city beaches are patrolled by life guards, who erect safety flags to swim between so you know that life guards are watching that stretch of beach. Bear in mind in the far northern tropical regions, although beaches look very inviting there can be salt water crocodiles and at certain times or year there can be dangerous jelly fish, so you need to take advise from local authorities as to what areas and times of year are safe to swim in.
